About Southern Cross
Southern Cross is a suburb of South East &
Central, Western Australia and is about 338 kms
east-northeast of WA's capital city of Perth. In the
2011 Australian census the population of Southern
Cross was 842 when there were 388 Females and
454 Males living there.
Southern Cross is the last town on the eastern
edge of the wheatbelt and the first town on the
Eastern Goldfields. Southern Cross was founded
by gold prospectors in 1888, and gazetted in 1890.
Southern Cross is the major town and
administrative centre of the Shire of Yilgarn. The
surrounding areas produce wheat and other
cereal crops. Southern Cross is a receival site for
Cooperative Bulk Handling.
